- The UN Just Called Russia’s Child Deportations a Crime Against Humanity. Now What?Share post:
On March 12, 2026, the UN stopped hedging. Russia’s deportation of Ukrainian children is a crime against humanity. The same legal category applied to the worst atrocities in modern history. The UN Commission verified 1,205 specific cases and found three categories: deportation, forcible transfer, and enforced disappearance.
What the Commission Found
This was systematic, state-directed, orchestrated from the top. Putin’s involvement was, in the Commission’s words, visible from the outset. Russia didn’t just take children: it concealed where they were. Families were denied information. International monitors were blocked.
The Growing Response
The U.S. State Department committed $25 million in March 2026 for identification, return, and rehabilitation. The White House announced six more children returned in April 2026. Thirty-seven nations participate in the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.
But rulings don’t rescue children. Mothers on trains rescue children.
What Actually Brings Kids Home
Save Ukraine has done it 1,026 times. WAAU funds every one of those missions. The UN ruling gives us legal backing. Your donation gives us the $3,383 it costs to turn legal backing into a child who sleeps in their own country tonight.
What Has to Happen
Child repatriation as a condition of peace. Any deal without children is incomplete.
Sustained funding. $25M is a start. The crisis involves hundreds of thousands.
More rescue missions. Diplomacy takes years. Children are forgetting their language now.
