- Ukraine’s Stolen Children: Every Question AnsweredShare post:
Russia has taken thousands of Ukrainian children since 2022. If you’re looking for a clear breakdown of what happened, what’s being done, and how you can help, here’s everything in one place.
What is the Ukrainian children deportation crisis?
Since February 2022, Russian forces have systematically removed children from occupied Ukrainian territories and transported them into Russia. Children were separated from families, given new identities, and enrolled in indoctrination programs. Ukraine has documented about 20,000 cases. Estimates go as high as 300,000.
Why did Russia take these children?
Russia called them evacuations. Investigators found a state-coordinated program to permanently remove Ukrainian children and erase their national identity. Putin signed a decree to fast-track their adoption. Occupation authorities built an online catalog for Russians to browse available kids.
Is this legally a war crime?
Yes. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova in March 2023 for unlawful deportation and transfer. In March 2026, the UN classified the deportations as crimes against humanity. The European Parliament called it a “genocidal strategy.”
How many children were taken?
About 20,000 documented. Yale’s HRL identified 8,400+ across 210+ facilities. An additional 2,219 went to Belarus. Russia’s own commissioner claimed 700,000. The real number is unknown because Russia has refused to share records and destroyed identity documents.
How many have been brought home?
About 2,000 total as of early 2026. Save Ukraine has directly rescued 1,026 through extraction missions where mothers physically travel into Russia. Each rescue costs $3,383.
What is Russification?
The systematic erasure of Ukrainian identity. Children are forbidden from speaking Ukrainian, given Russian documents and citizenship, enrolled in nationalist education, placed in military training, and told their families abandoned them.
Who runs rescue missions?
Save Ukraine, founded by Mykola Kuleba, is the only NGO regularly organizing extractions. We Are All Ukrainians USA and WAAU Germany fund the operations. Mothers travel guided routes through Belarus into Russia, locate their children, prove custody, and return together.
How much does a rescue cost?
$3,383 per child. Breakdown: $181 documents/logistics, $2,040 travel, $639 lodging, $214 food, $152 legal/training, $157 contingency.
Where do donations go?
WAAU USA → WAAU Germany → Save Ukraine’s rescue operations. Every dollar funds extraction missions.
How can I help right now?
Donate: $25 covers a meal. $152 covers training. $3,383 brings one child home. WeAreAllUkrainiansUSA.org
