- A Morning That Changed Everything: Vlad’s Journey HomeShare post:
Oleslav, who goes by Vlad, was 19 years old when armed men knocked on his door in occupied Kherson. It was an ordinary morning that became extraordinary in the worst possible way. His mother had already moved the family to his grandmother’s village for safety, but Vlad had returned to the city with his grandfather. When three Russian soldiers arrived at the apartment, one armed, they gave him no choice. Pack your things, they said. You’re coming with us.
Vlad was studying to become a shipbuilder at Kherson Maritime Vocational College. He came from a large family of six siblings, plus two children under guardianship. That morning, alone in the apartment, he had no time to say goodbye, no chance to protest. He was simply taken.
From Student to Captive
At the river port, Vlad found his classmates. They were told they were being evacuated to Crimea for their safety. Seventeen buses carried them across the border. When Vlad received his entry document, he noticed something chilling: there was a date for entering Crimea, but no date for leaving. In that moment, a terrible thought crossed his mind. He might never go home.
The young people were brought to the Druzhba recreation camp, where new rules governed their days. Every morning began with the Russian anthem and raising the Russian flag. For Vlad, the absurdity became too much. In an act of quiet rebellion, he took down the flag, replaced it with his underwear, and threw the flag in the trash. It was a small act of defiance that carried heavy consequences.
The camp’s security chief, Astakhov, discovered who was responsible. Vlad was given a choice: a psychiatric hospital or five days in isolation. He chose isolation. Weeks later, he was transferred to another camp called Luchystyy. When the young people asked when they could go home, the answer was always the same: when Russia occupies Kherson again, you’ll be returned.
A Mother’s Courage
Vlad managed to borrow phones from friends to call his mother, Tetiana, but she rarely answered. Then one evening, a call finally connected. His mother promised she would find a way to bring him home. Months passed. Vlad was moved again, this time to a naval military academy in Lazurne, where he spent five and a half months.
When Tetiana finally reached Crimea to retrieve her son, she was detained by security services on suspicion of being part of a sabotage group. For three days, she endured interrogations. The same officials questioned Vlad, asking if he wanted to return to Ukraine, suggesting he had no future there. But Vlad knew where his future belonged.
After Tetiana’s release, there was one final requirement before they could leave: they had to record a video praising Russia. Only then were their documents and phones returned. After waiting twelve hours at the border, they were finally allowed to cross. When Vlad realized he was back in Ukraine, the weight of months in captivity began to lift.
Bringing Every Child Home
Vlad never imagined his future with Russia. His future was always Ukraine. Under Russian control, he learned, you cannot have your own point of view. But now, home at last, he can build the life he always dreamed of, in the country he never stopped believing in.
Every Ukrainian child deserves what Vlad finally received: the chance to come home. Each story of return reminds us why this work matters. Until every child is back where they belong, the mission continues.
